MLB Postseason Starts Off with a Bang

The 2019 MLB Postseason kicked off on October 1st with the NL Wild Card Game between the Brewers and Nationals on TBS. The game averaged 990k OOH viewers and peaked at 11:02 PM with 1.46MM OOH viewers as the Nationals enjoyed a late comeback to advance to the NLDS. The next day, the Rays and Athletics squared off in the AL Wild Card Game on both ESPN and ESPN2. The Sunday Night Baseball crew of Matt Vasgersian, Alex Rodriguez and Jessica Mendoza called the game on ESPN while the Statcast AI crew of Eduardo Perez, Jason Benetti and Mike Petriello called the game on ESPN2. ESPN’s broadcast averaged 1.23MM OOH viewers and peaked at 8:35 PM with 1.54MM OOH viewers while ESPN2’s broadcast averaged 369,470 OOH viewers and peaked at 8:52 PM with 431,145 OOH viewers. 

 

The Division Series have gotten off to great starts, most notably Game 1’s. The most-watched MLB Postseason game thus far was Game 1 of the ALDS between the Twins and Yankees on MLB Network on Friday, October 5th as it averaged 1.52MM OOH viewers and peaked at 9:38 PM with 1.83MM OOH viewers. Coming in a close second was Game 1 of the NLDS between the Cardinals and Braves on TBS on Thursday, October 4th as it averaged 1.46MM OOH viewers and peaked at 7:03 PM with 1.64MM OOH viewers. Paul Lindstrom is the Head of Research and Analytics at Tunity, an out-of-home (OOH) data measurement company and consumer application which allows users to hear live audio from muted televisions directly through their mobile devices. He also directed sales, operations, and strategy for Nielsen Strategic Media Research and Nielsen On Location. Paul is an innovation, research, and strategy executive with a successful track record in pioneering business development, product leadership, and research design. His combination of experience with media and custom research, location, and OOH measurements at Nielsen have allowed him to develop a new metric to capture OOH viewing insights based on Tunity’s traffic, tuning, and attention data.
